Plan ahead: some ebooks have restrictions on how many copies can be used at once. Before assigning an ebook:

  • Check for user restrictions

If all students in the class need to access the ebook for a reading, check the Search@UW record for the book to ensure it is licensed for unlimited use. Some ebooks only allow for a limited number of simultaneous users. For example, A 3-user ebook can only be used by 3 students at once. Any UWM libraries user can access the ebook (including users not enrolled in the class assigning the text). When a user accesses the book, it is "checked out" to them for 24 hours. No one else can use that copy of the book during that time. It's much like having 3 copies of a physical book on reserve.

  • Consider downloading and assigning key portions of an ebook

For those ebooks with user restrictions, instructors can download a limited number of chapters and upload them to Canvas for students to access.
