What are Course Reserves?
Library reserve materials are books, articles, and other media set aside by professors for students to use in their classes. Course Reserve materials are marked in the catalog with a purple "Course" tag.
Physical Course Reserves
On the Milwaukee campus, physical books and media placed on course reserve can be checked out at the Equipment and Reserve Desk in the lower level of the Library. Most course reserve materials are available for 2 hours at a time to ensure equal access to course materials. 2-hour loan items may not be taken out of the building. (Some materials are on 2-day or 7-day loan. 2-day and 7-day reserve loan materials may be taken out of the building.)
eBooks and Articles on Reserve
eBooks or digital journal articles may also be placed on "reserve" for your course. This means that the ebook or digital journal article has been given the purple "Course" tag in the online library catalog to indicate that it is associated with a course. Articles and ebooks with the "Course" tag can be used by multiple people at the same time, and they do not have shortened loan periods like physical course reserve materials. All students, staff, and faculty members can access ebooks and articles with the "Course" tag. You do not need to be enrolled in the class is listed in the catalog record to use ebooks and articles with the "Course" tag. Electronic materials placed on reserve can be accessed from any device at any time, on or off campus.
Searching for Course Reserve Materials
Search for course reserve materials using the Course Reserve search (available via Search@UW). Search by your instructor's name, department, or course number to view results of items on reserve for your classes. A search for specific known item titles also works.
Your instructor may also make items available electronically via your Canvas course.
